I Got Lost in Cocoon’s Huge Number of Settings

IT-related

Why I Chose Cocoon

This blog uses the Cocoon WordPress theme.

At first, I was also interested in some paid themes, but I decided to start with a free one, and Cocoon seemed to have the most information available online.

After actually using it, I found that Cocoon is packed with features.
However, because there are so many settings, I was quite confused at first about where to start.

In particular, similar settings were sometimes spread across multiple menus, and I often could not tell where changes would actually appear, so I kept jumping back and forth between screens. Since WordPress itself also has many settings, it can become quite confusing.

The First Things I Configured

The first things I configured were basic items such as the site title, logo, and social media settings.

After that, I gradually adjusted items such as:

  • social share button placement
  • featured images
  • mobile display settings
  • comment settings
  • cache Settings
  • security-related settings

At first, I thought I needed to configure everything, but in reality many parts worked perfectly fine with the default settings.

For me, adjusting only the parts I actually needed later turned out to be a better approach.

About the Comment Settings

I also hesitated a little about enabling comments. Since I wanted to keep the blog manageable without too much stress, I currently keep the comment system fairly limited.

WordPress includes a manual comment approval feature, which allows comments to be checked before they are published.

I Also Added English Pages

Later on, I also decided to experiment with adding English pages.

I use TranslatePress for translations.

At first, I used a floating language switch button, but on iPhones it overlapped with the bottom menus of Safari and Firefox, making it difficult to tap.

In the end, I changed it to a simple 'JP | EN' in the header menu.

I also struggled a bit with the English page URL settings.

At first, I encountered 404 errors and URLs that remained in Japanese, but after gradually adjusting the slug and permalink settings, I finally got things working properly.

I Plan to Adjust Things Gradually

Cocoon has so many configuration options that I still do not fully understand everything.

However, I feel that gradually learning while actually writing blog posts suits me better.

Going forward, I plan to continue adjusting things only when necessary and keep running the blog at a comfortable pace.
